Symphony #2, Metacosmos and “Farewell” Symphony
In Maestro Steven Schick’s final concert before he becomes Music Director Emeritus, we present Brahms cheery and almost pastoral Symphony No. 2. The tone of this work has often invited comparisons to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral”. We’ll follow that with a gorgeous and engrossing tone poem by Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Metacosmos. Appropriately, we’ll finish the concert with Haydn’s ‘Farewell’ Symphony, in which the composer directs the orchestra to leave the stage one by one. During the final adagio, each musician stops playing, snuffs out the” candle” on their music stand, and leaves in turn, so that at the end there are just two muted violins remaining.
