Frequently Asked Questions

We’re thrilled that you’re considering joining us at the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus (LJS&C)! Whether you’re attending your first symphony or just want to know what to expect, we’ve put together a friendly guide to help make your experience unforgettable.

What to Expect at a Concert:

Our concerts are held at Mandeville Auditorium on the UCSD campus, a space where music comes alive! Each performance typically lasts about two hours, with one 15-20 minute intermission. You’ll hear a mix of contemporary and classical works, curated to inspire and captivate.

Before You Arrive:

Dress Code: There is no dress code! Some people enjoy dressing up. but we encourage you to wear whatever makes you comfortable. Whether it’s casual or dressy, we welcome all styles.

Arriving Early: Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the performance starts. This gives you time to find parking, pick up your tickets at Will Call, and explore the venue.

Parking: UCSD offers convenient parking options near Mandeville
Auditorium. Keep in mind that parking is paid, so allow some time to find a spot and take care of parking fees.

During the Concert:

Seating: Once seated, take a moment to enjoy the pre-concert buzz and soak in the atmosphere. Programs are provided at the entrance, so you can follow along and learn more about the pieces being performed.

Applause: Not sure when to clap? A good rule of thumb is to wait until the conductor has fully lowered their arms and turned to the audience. It’s common to wait until the end of an entire piece, rather than clapping between movements.

Intermission: This is your time to stretch, grab a refreshment, and chat about the music with fellow attendees. The intermission is about 15-20 minutes long.

For Your Comfort:

Accessibility: We strive to make our performances accessible to everyone
If you need assistance with seating, mobility, or hearing devices, let us know in advance or speak to one of our friendly ushers.

After the Concert:

Feel free to stick around and chat with fellow concertgoers! Our musicians love to connect with the audience, and sometimes you may even catch them mingling in the lobby.

FAQS:

Do I need to know classical music to enjoy it? Not at all! Our concerts are designed for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned music lover or a first-timer. Just sit back, relax, and let the music move you.
